After a speech by Dr. H, Director of the Institute for English Language Program, we students were divided into levels and received brief self-introductions and future lessons from the instructors in charge of each level.
Then, we students were asked to write an essay to judge the classification without any notice within the time limit of 25 minutes.
I was very confused about what the theme was, but I decided to write about my experience when I switched from Washington Dulles International Airport to Boston flight during this trip.
I knew that the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001 made security checks at the US International Airport even more stringent.
At the time I knew in advance, I was relieved that I had 90 minutes to transfer to the Boston flight after arriving at Dulles International Airport.
But when I actually lined up at the end of a long line of security checks at Dallas International Airport, I was surprised that most people were wearing rubber sandals.
And when it was my turn to wait so long that my legs hurt, the first request from the security staff was to take off my shoes and show them inside.
The next request was to take out all the items including the notebook PC from the carrying bag and arrange them at the check counter for checking, and suddenly the nail clippers in the pouch were caught by the metal detector and I was surprised.
After the security staff threw my checked items onto the conveyor belt, I picked them up, put them in a bag, ran a long concourse at full speed, and boarded a Boston flight. It was just before takeoff.
I was worried about how much my poor handwritten text could be read by the examiner, but this essay was immediately examined in a separate room and I became the class in charge of a female Ma instructor from the Middle East out of two levels B.

突然のクラス分けエッセイ・テスト

Institute for English Language Programディレクター、ドクターＨのスピーチの後、私たち受講生はレベル別に分けられて、レベル別担当インストラクターから簡単な自己紹介と今後の授業についての説明を受けた。
そして、私達受講生は何の予告もなくクラス分けの判断材料とするエッセイを制限時間２５分で書くことを求められた。
私は何をテーマにするかで大いに戸惑ったが、今回の渡航におけるワシントン・ダレス国際空港からボストン便へ乗り換た時の体験を書くことにした。
２００１年９月１１日の同時多発テロにより、アメリカ国際空港でのセキュリティ・チェックが一段と厳しくなっていることは私も承知していた。
事前に把握した時点では、私がダレス国際空港に到着てからボストン便に乗り換える時間は９０分あると安心していた。
しかし、実際に私がダラス国際空港でセキュリティ・チェックの長蛇の列の最後尾に並んだとき、大半の人がゴムサンダルを履いているのに驚いた。
そして、足が痛くなるほど長時間待たされて私の順番が来ると、セキュリティ・スタッフから最初に要求されたのは靴を脱いで靴の中を見せることだった。
次に要求されたのは、携行バッグからノートＰＣを含む全ての品物を取出してチェックカウンターに並べてチェックを受ける事で、突然ポーチの中の爪切りが金属探知機に引っかかって驚かされた。
セキュリティ・スタッフがチェックを終えた私の品物をベルトコンベアーに投げ出した後、私はそれらの品物を拾い集めてバッグに収納して、長いコンコースを全速力で走って、ボストン便に乗り込んだ時は離陸直前であった。
果たして私の下手な手書きの文章がどこまで審査担当者に判読できるか心配したが、このエッセイが直ちに別室で審査され、２クラスあるレベルＢのうちの中東出身女性Ｍaインストラクター担当のクラスになった。
