My Boston-based friend MS. T is worried that I've had the opportunity to stay in Cambridge for two months, but never go to Boston across the Charles River.
Her concern was justified, and my initial vision was to live in her longing Boston for about two months to commemorate my retirement.
However, I was worried that if I stayed at a city hotel such as the Sheraton Hotel for two months, the accommodation fee alone would be 600,000 yen, and if I included three meals a day, sightseeing and shopping, it would be quite a lot.
However, MS. T advised me, "If so, if you study abroad at Harvard Summer School, which starts right after your retirement, you will have three meals, a dormitory, and even if you include English learning expenses, it will be much cheaper." I jumped in without thinking about anything.
I had no doubt that I had plenty of time to enjoy Boston sightseeing, shopping, and eating out in parallel with my summer school classes.
However, now that I am busy with homework, assignments, and presentation preparation, I cannot catch up with the class unless I sleep four hours a day and study on holidays.
And now, I have a lot to gain from doing these tasks, and I have a strong desire to respond positively.
In addition to a rich curriculum, an instructor with high teaching skills, I have to stretch myself considerably to make the most of this privileged learning environment, so I plan to spend my stay in Cambridge on a study-oriented basis.

今回のケンブリッジ滞在は勉強本位で

私のボストン在住の友人MS.Ｔが、私が折角ケンブリッジに２ヶ月滞在する機会を得ているのに、チャールズリバー向こうのボストンに全く足を向けないと心配してくれている。
彼女の懸念はもっともで、私が当初描いていたのは私の定年退職の記念に憧れのボストンで２ヶ月ほど暮らす事だった。
しかし、例えばシェラトンホテルのようなシティホテルで２ヶ月滞在すると宿泊費だけで日本円で６０万円、それに１日3食、観光・買い物を含めるとなかなかの額になるので悩んでいた。
ところが、MS.Ｔが、「だったら、貴方の定年退職直後から始めるハーバードサマースクールに留学すれば三食・寮つき、そして英語学習費を含めても遙かに安上がり」とのアドバイスに私は何も考えずに飛びついたのだった。
私は、サマースクールの授業と平行して、ボストン観光、ショッピング、食べ歩きを楽しむ時間は充分あると信じて疑わなかった。
ところが、今の私は宿題、課題、プレゼンテーション準備に追われ、１日の睡眠時間が4時間、その他に休日も勉強しないと授業に追いつけない。
そして、今の私には、これらの課題をこなす事から得るものがたくさんあり、むしろ積極的に対応したい気持が強くなっている。
充実したカリキュラムに加え、ティーチングスキルの高いインストラクター、この恵まれた学習環境を最大限活用するには、私自身が相当背伸びしなければならないわけで、今回のケンブリッジ滞在は勉強本位で過ごすつもりだ。
