Today, Doctor H , director of the Institute for English Language Program, gave a strong welcome speech to the students at the orientation at Harvard Hall.
After a brief introduction, she suddenly asked her students, "Have you already obtained the orientation material and read it before attending here?"
She then asked students who had not yet obtained orientation materials to raise their hands.
In addition, Dr. H emphasized to the students who raised their hands, "It is a natural participation attitude as a learner to read the materials before attending this orientation."
We students were given a pre-emptive punch from Dr. H, saying that if we were to study at Harvard Summer School, we should prepare in advance and attend the lecture.
At this time, when I turned to the instructors lined up beside the podium, I could see that they were nervous about the existence of Doctor H.

オリエンテーションで強烈なパンチを

今日、Harvard Hallで行われたオリエンテーションにおける、Institute for English Language Programのディレクターを務めるドクターＨの受講生への歓迎スピーチは強烈であった。
彼女は短い自己紹介の後で、いきなり、「オリエンテーション資料を既に入手して、ここに参加する前に読んでいるか？」と受講生に質問した。
そして、彼女は、オリエンテーション資料を未だ入手していない受講生に対して挙手を求めた。
さらに、ドクターHは挙手した受講生に向かって、「このオリエンテーションに参加する前に資料に眼を通しておくのは学ぶ者として当然の参加姿勢である」と強調した。
私達受講生は、ドクターHから、ハーバードサマースクールで学ぶのであれば、事前準備をして講義に臨むべきだ、と、先制パンチを浴びたのだ。
私がこの時、演壇の脇に並んでいるインストラクター達に目を向けると、彼らがドクターＨの存在に緊張しているのが伝わってきた。
