In order to better understand the Harvard University professor's lecture on the theme of "Nicolaus Copernicus" in the Plenary Lecture Series, the instructor set nearly 10 themes related to "Nicolaus Copernicus" and listed them on the whiteboard.
Then, each theme was presented in pairs, and as a result of the instructor deciding "team formation" and "theme assignment", my teammate was decided to be a Taiwanese businessman Mr. C.
However, neither Mr. C nor I could understand the meaning of the theme "De Revolutionibus" that was given to us, and we were perplexed.
This is because I can imagine that "De Revolutionibus" is close to the English word "revolution", but how does "revolution", which I understand as applied to the "Russian Revolution" and "Industrial Revolution", relate to Nicolaus Copernicus? I couldn't understand why.
However, my classmates in the alphabet world nodded when they heard "De Revolutionibus", so it seems that it is quite popular among them.
After school on the day that the team was formed, Mr. C and I searched the web at the computer center on campus, and as we wrestled with a mountain of information, we came across "De Revolutionibus," a French-language book by Nicolaus Copernicus. Moreover, despite the publication of the book after his death by publishers who feared persecution by the Church and authorities, the book was not only banned for a long time, but was controversial until recently. I found out that it was.
Furthermore, I learned for the first time that "revolution" has the meaning of "rotation" related to the movement of celestial bodies.

「Ｄｅ Ｒｅｖｏｌｕｔｉｏｎｉｂｕｓ」（１）

プレナリー・レクチャーシリーズでの「ニコラウス・コペルニクス」をテーマにしたハーバード大学教授の講義をより深く理解するために、インストラクターが「ニコラウス・コペルニクス」に関連する１０近いテーマを設定して白板に列記した。
そして、各テーマを２人一組でプレゼンテーションを行うことになり、インストラクターが「チーム編成」と「テーマの割り当て」を決定した結果、私のチームメイトは台湾人ビジネスマンのMr.Ｃに決まった。
しかし、私達に与えられたテーマの「Ｄｅ Ｒｅｖｏｌｕｔｉｏｎｉｂｕｓ」が、一体どういう意味なのか、Mr.Ｃも私も全く理解出来ず困惑した。
何故なら、「Ｄｅ Ｒｅｖｏｌｕｔｉｏｎｉｂｕｓ」が英語の「revolusion」に近いと言うことはイメージできるが、私の理解する「ロシア革命」や「産業革命」に適用する「revolusion」がニコラウス・コペルニクスにどう関係するのか理解出来なかったのだ。
ところが、アルファベット圏のクラスメートは「Ｄｅ Ｒｅｖｏｌｕｔｉｏｎｉｂｕｓ」と聞いて頷いているから、彼らの間では、それなりに普及しているようだ。
チーム編成の日の放課後、Mr.Ｃと私は、キャンパス内のコンピューターセンターでｗｅｂ検索して、山のような情報と格闘するうちに、「Ｄｅ Ｒｅｖｏｌｕｔｉｏｎｉｂｕｓ」が、ニコラウス・コペルニクスの仏語の著書のタイトルであること、さらに、教会や権力の弾圧を恐れた出版社が、その著書を彼の死後に出版したにもかかわらず、長い間発禁の書となったばかりか、つい最近まで議論の的になっていたこと等が分かった。
さらに、私は「レボリューション」が、天体の運行に関する「自転」の意味を有することを初めて知った。
