After school today, I met my classmates in the courtyard of Kirkland House and headed out to Chinatown.
There are a total of 6 people, including Japanese male language student K, Taiwanese businessmen E and C, Japanese female M, and K's roommate, a Hong Kong male J who attends an American graduate school.
The original plan was dim sum, but when we arrived at the restaurant, the dim sum time had passed, so the next plan was left to Mr. J, who is a foodie and familiar with Boston Chinatown.
Mr. J guided us to a Hong Kong restaurant that belongs to a large store in Chinatown.
Mr. J first approached the aquarium installed in the store and selected large fish, shrimp, and crabs from them.
After that, Mr. J specified to the staff how to cook the fish head and bones soup, the fish meat steamed, and the shrimp and crab.
In addition, Mr. J ordered additional "rice", "stir-fried garlic and oysters of edible frogs" and "stir-fried abalone and bean sprouts" from the menu table.
Thanks to Mr. J, we can enjoy a luxurious meal at 34 $ per person including a small bottle of beer, dessert, and chips, which is one-third the price of a leading Chinese restaurant in Tokyo.
About 18 years after that, Hong Kong has changed drastically, and what is Mr. J doing now?

クラスメートと中華街に繰り出す

今日の放課後に、私はクラスメートとカークランドハウスの中庭に集合して中華街に繰り出した。
その顔ぶれは、日本人男子語学留学生Ｋ君、台湾人ビジネスマンＥ氏とＣ氏、日本人女性Ｍ、Ｋ君のルームメートでアメリカの大学院に通う香港人男性Ｊと私の計６人。
当初の計画は飲茶であったが、私達がレストランに到着したときには飲茶の時間が過ぎていたので、次の計画は食通で、かつボストン中華街に精通しているＪ君に一任した。
Ｊ君が私達を案内したのは、この中華街でも大店に属する香港系のレストランであった。
J君は最初に店内据え付けの水槽に近寄り、その中から大ぶりの魚、海老、蟹を選んだ。
その後でJ君は、魚の頭と骨はスープ、魚の身は蒸し料理、海老と蟹についても調理方法をスタッフに指定した。
さらにJ君はメニュー表から「ご飯」「食用蛙のニンニク・オイスター炒め」と「鮑と豆苗炒め」を追加注文した。
私達はJ君のお陰で、各自小瓶１本のビール、デザート、チップを含めて一人当たり３４＄と、東京の一流中華料理店の３分の１の値段で豪華な食事を満喫することが出来た。
あれから約１８年、香港は激変して、今J君はどうしているのであろうか？
