In early June 2000, my friend E and I were invited by our mutual friend T to a Harvard Kennedy School graduation luncheon ceremony and enjoyed a short five-night stay in Boston.
We were asked for this invitation in December of the previous year, but in early June Boston was full of Harvard graduates' families, relatives, friends and acquaintances from all over the world. So, after receiving T's advice that the reservation should be completed half a year ago, I booked the Sheraton Hotel near Newbury Street and Copley Place.
The main ceremony of the Harvard graduation ceremony at that time was held in the morning, and after that, it was divided into each faculty, business school, law school, Kennedy School, etc., and the diploma was awarded at the luncheon ceremony.
After the diploma was awarded, there was an endless party where their families, relatives, friends and acquaintances gathered around the graduates to celebrate their graduation.
According to T, who participated in the main ceremony in the morning, five honorary guests include Seiji Ozawa, who is the music director of the Boston Symphony Orchestra, and Kenzaburo Oe, who won the 1994 Nobel Prize in Literature.
On the way back from Boston, I saw the back of Mr. Kenzaburo Oe heading for the boarding plane after the announcement of the start of boarding in the United Airlines waiting room at Logan International Airport. He returned home on the same flight as us.
At the 2000 Harvard graduation ceremony, two of the five honorary guests invited from around the world were Japanese. At that time, I realized that Harvard University and Japan had a good relationship, and that Japan had momentum.
２０００年６月初旬、私と友人のＥは、共通の友人のＴから、ハーバード・ケネディスクール卒業ランチョン・セレモニーの招待を受け、休暇をやりくりして５泊の短いボストン滞在を楽しんだ。
私達がこの招待を打診されたのは前年の１２月であったが、６月初旬のボストンはハーバード大学卒業生の家族・親族・友人・知人が世界中から集まりボストン中のホテルは満室になるので、予約は半年前に終えた方が良いとのＴのアドバイスを受け、ニューベリー・ストリートやコプリー・プレイスに近いシェラトン・ホテルを予約した。
あの時のハーバード大学卒業式のメイン式典は午前に催され、その後は各学部、ビジネススクール、ロースクール、ケネディスクール等に分かれて行われて、卒業証書の授与はランチョン・セレモニーで行われた。
そして、卒業証書の授与の後は卒業生を囲んで世界中から集まった彼らの家族・親族・友人・知人達が卒業を喜び祝うパーティーが延々と続いた。
午前のメイン式典に参加したＴの話によると、５人の名誉ゲストの中にボストン交響楽団の音楽監督を勤めている小沢征爾氏と、１９９４年ノーベル文学賞受賞の大江健三郎氏が含まれていた。
ボストンから帰路のローガン国際空港のユナイテッド航空の待合室で搭乗開始のアナウンスの後で搭乗機に向かう大江健三郎氏の後ろ姿を拝見した。私達と同じ便で帰国されたのだ。
２０００年のハーバード大学の卒業式典で、世界中から招待される５人の名誉ゲストの内の２人が日本人だったのだ。あの頃はハーバード大学と日本が良い関係にあり、かつ、日本に勢いがあったのだとつくづく思った。
