今思い返すと、当時の入場料が１ドルだったからあの時私達は黙ってその場を去ったが、もし現在と同じ１５ドルであったら、私達はお店にクレームをつけたかも知れない。

 そんな中でひっそりとした佇まいのカフェを見つけた。このカフェは地元の人達が美味しい珈琲と手作りのパンやケーキと共に寛ぐ場のようで、普段着姿の客達は、ビビットな色では無くモーブやく灰色を帯びたグリーンやブラウンといったくすんだパステルカラーの人が多く、まるでヨーロッパのどこかにいるような気分にさせてくれた。

今から思うとあのビーコンヒルのカフェの佇まいと客達の醸した雰囲気が、私にボストン滞在生活をしてみたいという思いを募らせ、２００４年の定年退職直後のハーバードサマースクールへの留学を実現させたのだと。
