After 40 years of working as an office worker, I was about to start a leisurely life.
However, even though it is a short-term study abroad program for two months, the students who have been attracted to the Harvard brand and have participated from all over the world are ambitious or have a strong tendency to rise.
At Level B, to which I belong, the proportion of Asian students is high overall, but there are more students from Europe than I expected. Is this because English has become established in the official language of the EU and English ability is indispensable to acquire a better position?
All the students from Asia, except me, are men and women in their late twenties and early thirties, and it is clear that their purpose of participation is to obtain high salaries and high positions. However, it is strange that there are almost no students from China.
What I saw through yesterday's and today's lessons is related to Level B, but very few people speak with clear pronunciation and proper grammar, and I can't understand what they're talking about. It's stressful. That can be said to myself.
However, even in such a situation, the instructor does not correct the pronunciation and grammar of the student one by one, but rather encourages the student to speak positively.
This classroom is not aimed at learning correct English so far. Rather, it aims to communicate in various forms of English. In other words, what we learn in this program is English for communication, not exemplary English.
I think the world is in the age of local English. There are as many English words with different pronunciations and grammars as there are countries and regions. From now on, workers, scholars, students, and volunteers will communicate in such diverse styles of English.
I participated in this program only with the motivation to enjoy life in Boston by taking advantage of my free time after retirement.
However, in front of the ambitious people, at least while enrolled in the summer school, I decided to switch my mind to work hard with them.
野心家達の最後尾に連なることに

私は４０年間の会社員生活を定年で終えて、これからはのんびり暮らす生活を始める積りであった。
しかし、たかだか、２ヶ月間の短期留学とはいえ、さすがにハーバードのブランドに惹きつけられて世界各国から参加してきた学生達は、野心家というか上昇志向が極めて強い。
私の属するレベルＢでは、全体的にはアジアの学生の比率が高いが、私が予想したよりもヨーロッパからの学生が多い。これは、ＥＵ圏の公用語に英語が定着して、より良いポジションを獲得するには英語力が不可欠となっているからか。
アジアから参加した学生達は、私を除いた全てが２０代後半から３０代前半の男女であり、彼らの参加目的も、高給と高いポジションの獲得であることは一目瞭然である。しかし、中国からの学生が皆無に近いのは不思議だ。
昨日と今日の授業を通して私に見えてきたことは、レベルＢということも関係しているが、クリアーな発音ときちんとした文法で話す人は極めて少なく、彼らが何について話しているのか理解できずストレスが溜まる位だ。それは、私自身にも云えることだが。
しかし、そういう状況でも、インストラクターは、いちいち学生の発音や文法を訂正しないばかりか、むしろ学生が積極的に発言することを後押しする。
この教室では、今のところ正しい英語を身につける事を目的としていない。むしろ多様な形態の英語でコミュニケートする事を目的としている。つまり、このプログラムで私達が身につけるのはコミュニケーションの為の英語であって、模範的な英語ではない。
私が思うに、これからの世界はローカル英語の時代だ。国や地域の数だけ、発音や文法がまちまちな英語がある。これからは、働く人も、学者も、学生も、ボランティアに関わる人も、そういう多様スタイルの英語の中でコミュニケートしてゆくのだ。
私は、定年退職後の自由な時間を活用してボストン生活を楽しみたいという動機だけでこのプログラムに参加した。
しかし、野心家達を目の前にして、せめてサマースクール在籍中は、彼らと共に切磋琢磨する事に気持ちを切り替えることにした。
