A friend and I, who completed the accommodation procedure at a hotel in London on May 1, 2001, threw the luggage we brought from Japan into the room and set foot on Regent Street enthusiastically for brand shopping. However, most of the brand shops were closed with sturdy boards.
We had to gather information first, so we decided to sit down at a cafe that was open and listen to the conversation inside the store.
And what I found was that an anti-globalization demonstration was scheduled for the night, and the Prime Minister's Office and Regent Street were the targets of the demonstration procession. By the way, when we looked through the window of the cafe, people rushing home quickly headed for the bus stop and subway station, and there was a long line at the bus stop.
When we had no choice but to return to the hotel and have dinner at the window seat of the cafe on the first floor, people who appeared from the Green Park subway station adjacent to the hotel were heading for Green Park across the street. Perhaps the meeting place for the demonstration was Green Park.
After dinner we turned on the TV in the room. There, the demonstrators who covered their faces with helmets and masks pressed against the riot police armed with duralumin shields, and the demonstrators peeled off the paving stones of the road and threw them to counter the riot police.
Through this, I was reminded of the fierceness of the anti-globalization struggle that was sweeping Europe at that time, and at the same time, I came up with my own feelings that I had no doubts about globalism.
２００１年５月１日にLondonのホテルで宿泊手続きを終えた友人と私は日本から運んだ荷物を部屋に放り込み、いざ、ブランド・ショッピングをと意気込んでリーヂェント・ストリートに足を踏み入れた。しかし、ブランド・ショップの殆どは頑丈な板で覆われ休業中だった。
出鼻をくじかれた私たちは、先ずは情報収集をしなくてはと、私達は営業中のカフェに腰を下ろして店内の会話に耳を傾けることにした。
そして、分かった事は、その夜に反グローバリズムの大規デモが予定され、首相官邸やリーヂェント・ストリートがデモ行進の対象になっている事だった。そういえば、私達がカフェの窓越しに目を向けると、帰宅を急ぐ人たちが足早にバス停や地下鉄の駅を目指し、バス停では長い行列が出来ていた。
仕方なくホテルに引き返して私達が１階カフェの窓際の席で夕食を摂っていると、ホテルに隣接する地下鉄のグリーン・パーク駅から現れた人々が、通りを隔てたグリーン・パークに向かっていた。多分デモの集合場所がグリーン・パークであったのだろう。
ディナーを終えた私達は部屋のテレビを点けた。そこでは、ヘルメットと覆面で顔を覆ったデモ隊がジュラルミン製の楯で武装した機動隊と押し合う姿や、デモ隊が機動隊に対抗するために道路の敷石を剥がして投げつける姿が写されていた。
このことを通して、当時ヨーロッパを席捲していた反グローバリズム闘争の激しさを改めて認識したと共に、グローバリズムに対して何の疑問も抱かずにいたこれまでの自分のうかつさに思い至った。
