We, the tour members, boarded a cruise ship from the dock near the Marriott Hotel, each with a Marriott Hotel's special lunch box, to head to their next destination, Vienna.
The Danube River, which flows through the center of Budapest, flows into the Black Sea via 10 countries: Germany, Austria, Slovakia, Hungary, Crocia, Serbia, Romania, Bulgaria, Moldova and Ukraine.
Living in an island country surrounded by the sea, it is not easy for me to cross the border. First, you have to go to a distant international airport to board a passenger plane, and then line up in a long line of complicated immigration procedures at the international airport.
However, when traveling abroad on a Danube cruise, the departure procedure at the pier, which is a few minutes' walk from the hotel, and the entry procedure at the pier, which is the destination Vienna, were really easy.
That is not all. Most of the visits to Germany, Czech Republic, Hungary, and Austria were land-based, so the trip was a small charter bus except via the Danube, but the simplicity of immigration procedures was a culture shock.
On the cruise ship, the tour members split into small groups and had a relaxing time, enjoying the rich flow of the Danube and the spectacular views of both banks.
In the meantime, I enjoyed a friendly conversation with two older women, but a woman who participated with her husband who retired said, "My husband suffered from severe depression for about half a year after retirement." I can't forget that I was worried that I would be depressed when I reached retirement age nine years later.
私たちツアーツアーメンバーは次の目的地ウィーンに向かうために、各々がマリオットホテル特製のランチボックスを手に、ホテル近くの船着き場からにクルーズ船に乗った。
ブダペストの真ん中を流れるドナウ川はドイツ・オーストリア・スロヴァキア・ハンガリー・クロチア・セルビア・ルーマニア・ブルガリア・モルドバ・ウクライナの１０カ国を経て黒海に流れ込んでいるのだ。
周囲を海に囲まれた島国に住む私にとって国境を越えるのは用意ではない。先ず、旅客機に乗る為に遠くの国際空港に足を運び、その後で国際空港での煩雑な出入国手続きの長蛇の列に並ばなければならない。
ところが、ドナウ川クルーズに拠る海外旅行では、出発地ブダペストでは、ホテルから徒歩数分の船着き場での出国手続き、到着地ウィーンでも船着場での入国手続きは実に簡単であった。
それだけではない。今回のドイツ、チェコ、ハンガリー、オーストリア訪問の大半が陸続きのため、移動はドナウ川経由を除いて小型チャーターバスであったが、出入国手続きの簡易さはカルチャー・ショックであった。
クルーズ船では、ドナウ川の豊かな流れと両岸の素晴らしい景観を楽しみながら、ツアーメンバーは小グループに別れて寛いだひとときを過ごしていた。
そんな中で、私は年上の女性２人と打ち解けた会話を楽しんでいたが、定年退職した夫と一緒に参加した女性から「夫が定年後に半年ほど深刻な鬱病にかかって大変だった」と聞かされて、９年後に定年を迎える私も鬱病になるのであろうかと心配したことが忘れられない。
