My first overseas trip was a pack tour of "West Coast of the USA and Hawaii" that I participated with my friends using the year-end and New year vacation in 1977.
This triggered that the then West Coast music boom, and the yen / dollar exchange rate rose from 292 yen at the beginning of the year to around 240 yen at the end of the year.
Now I feel the flow of time that the visa application was necessary for the American tourism trip in those days.
Although it was a stay of only 2 nights in San Francisco, as the entrance of the Sir Francis Drake Hotel stayed facing the cable car stop, we took a closer look at the building which is built on the steep slope from the deck.
Furthermore, we got off the cable car and spent our time watching the cityscape overlooking the lawn hills, the San Francisco Bay, and the elegant Bay Bridge.
Forty years have passed since then, even now I recall that the cable car at that time was a mechanism to rotate with a long lever like a handle, with the car body as the base point, when turning at the end point, Having asked the driver to bring the levers together by shouting together. Even now I am grateful to the gentle driver.
This figure is the door of the toilet at the time of San Francisco International Airport. I got a culture shock to the boldness that covers only the minimum necessary as compared with Japan.
追想１９７７ サンフランシスコ
私の初めての海外旅行は、１９７７年の年末年始休暇を利用して友人と参加した「アメリカ西海岸とハワイ」のパックツアーだった。
これは当時がウエスト・コースト・ミュージックブームであった事、そして円・ドルレートが年初の２９２円から年末の２４０円あたりに切り上がった事が引き金になった。
今では、あの頃のアメリカ観光旅行にビザ申請が必要であったことに時の流れを感じる。
サンフランシスコではわずか２泊の滞在だったが、宿泊したサー・フランシス・ドレイクホテルの入口がケーブルカーの停車場に面していたので、私達はデッキから急傾斜地に建つ建物をじっくり観察した。
さらには、私たちは、ケーブルカーから下車して、芝生の丘から見下ろす街並や、サンフランシスコ湾、そしてエレガントなベイブリッジを眺めて時を過ごした。
あれから４０年が過ぎ、今でも私が思い出すのは、当時のケーブルカーは終点で向きを変える時、車体を基点に運んで、柄の様に長い梃子で回転させる仕組だったが、私たちは運転手にお願いして一緒にかけ声を合わせて梃子を回させて貰ったこと。今でも私は優しかった運転手に感謝しています。
この図は当時のサンフランシスコ国際空港のトイレのドアです。私は、日本に比べて必要最小限だけを覆う大胆さに私はカルチャーショックをうけた。
