Scenery of painting material store (1) around 1970

I was reading a writer Hashimoto Osamu 's dialogue collection, and I was interested in the content that tells the scenery of the painting shop where he went through as a young age.

Mr. Hashimoto, born in 1948, is now a heavyweight of literary figures, but he was also used as an illustrator when he was young.

Especially at the time of the Tokyo University conflict which continued from 1968 to 1969, the poster created by Mr. Hashimoto who was a student at the University of Tokyo has still left a brilliant impression.

"The painter shop in those days was a place where designers, painters, young people aspiring to the painter, etc. were just fashionable people, so it was hard for what to wear when going to buy art materials.

However, thereafter, as the painting material store began to put manuscript paper for manga, people wanting to be a manga artist came and the fashion of people gathered at the painting material shop became loose.

Most of the people who wish to be a cartoonist are wearing denim on a daily basis and go to the painting shop as it is, so the painting shop is not a beautiful place. That was around the end of the 1970s'

For me, this episode was interesting because I could imagine the process that the painter shop would change from where only the fashionable people go, and where casual wear people gather.


画材屋の光景(1)1970年頃

私は作家の橋本治の対談集を読んでいて、彼が若い頃に通っていた画材屋の光景を語る内容に興味を惹かれた。

1948年生まれの橋本氏は今でこそ文壇の重鎮だが、彼の若い頃はイラストレーターとしても活躍されていたのだ。

特に1968年から1969年にかけて続いた東大紛争時に、東大の学生だった橋本氏が作成したポスターは今でも鮮烈な印象を残している。

ところで、その橋本治氏が彼の20年代後半に通っていた画材屋の光景とは、

「あのころの画材屋はデザイナーとか、画家とか、画家志望の若者等の際だってお洒落な人ばかりが来る所だったので、画材を買いに行く時に何を着てゆくかで大変だった。

ところが、その後、画材屋が漫画用の原稿用紙を置くようになってから、漫画家志望の人たちが来るようになって、画材屋に集まる人達のファッションがルーズになっていった。

大概の漫画家志望の人達は日常的にデニムを着ていて、そのまま画材屋に行くから画材屋が美しい場所ではなくなった。それが、1970年代半ばから終り頃」

私にとってはこのエピソードは、画材屋がとびきりお洒落な人達だけが行く場所から、カジュアルウェアな人達が集まる場所に変化していく過程が想像できて興味深かった。
