One of the pleasures of this trip to London was to eat beef steak tirelessly.
Even today, beef is a luxury item for the average Japanese and rarely appears on the table at home.
Moreover, the difference in beef prices between London and Japan in 2001 was quite wide, which is why we were looking forward to taking this opportunity to eat a thick sirloin steak.
However, when we walked from our hotel Park Lane to Piccadilly Circus and Regent Street, the beef steakhouse guests were sparse.
For example, if you look inside a large beef steakhouse through a window, there is only one group of four in one corner. Also, at one medium-sized beef steakhouse, the kitchen staff inside the circular counter is dealing with only two guests.
In other words, most of the beef steakhouses were in a Japanese expression, "a lonely old bird is singing," which means that there are few customers and it is a lonely state.
In fact, the news of mad cow disease in London was widely reported in Japan, but most of it was about symptoms, so we could not clearly imagine the effect.
Moreover, in Japan, there are few stores dedicated to beef steakhouses, and general steakhouses handle chicken and pork in addition to beef, and if mad cow disease is prevalent, customers order chicken or pork, so the store side Can also cover damage.
However, since London is run on beef steak, the damage caused by mad cow disease is clearly visible to us Japanese.
After all, we had no choice but to give up beef steak.
今回のロンドン旅行の楽しみの一つはビーフステーキを飽きるほど食べることだった。
現在でも、平均的な日本人にとって牛肉は贅沢品で滅多に家庭の食卓に登場することは無い。
ましてや、２００１年当時のロンドンと日本の牛肉価格の差はかなり開いており、それだからこそ、私達はこの機会に分厚いサーロイン・ステーキをお腹いっぱい食べたいと楽しみにしていたのだ。
ところが、私達が滞在ホテルのパーク・レーンからピカデリー・サーカスやリージェントストリートを歩いたところ、ビーフステーキハウスの客はまばらだった。
例えば、ある大規模なビーフステーキハウスをウインドウ越しに中を見ると、片隅に４人連れのグループ一組いるだけ。また、ある中規模のビーフステーキハウスでは円形カウンターの内側にいるキッチンのスタッフはたった二人の客を相手にしているだけ。
つまり、殆どのビーフステーキハウスの店内は、日本語表現の、客が少なくて侘しい状態を表す「閑古鳥（寂しい古い鳥）が鳴いている」状態だった。
実はロンドンの狂牛病のニュースは日本でもかなり報道されていたが、その大半は症状に関する内容だったので、その影響を私達は明確な形でイメージできていなかった。
しかも、日本では、ビーフステーキハウス専用の店舗は少なく、一般的なステーキハウスが牛肉の他に鶏肉・豚肉も扱い、もし、狂牛病が流行すれば客は鶏肉または豚肉を注文するので店側もダメージをカバー出来る。
しかし、ロンドンはビーフステーキで経営が成り立つので、狂牛病のダメージは日本人の私達の目にはっきりと映る。
結局、私達はビーフステーキを諦める他はなかった。
