For a while after arriving in London, my companion found Vodafone, Nokia, and Ericsson stores, checked the stores, and got a pamphlet, so I muttered inwardly, "You are on vacation now?"
At that time, mobile phones were beginning to spread explosively worldwide, and under such circumstances, Japanese mobile-related companies were paying close attention to precision and function expansion without paying attention to the global market.
However, Vodafone, a mobile phone operator headquartered in the United Kingdom, Nokia Corporation of Finland, which manufactures mobile devices, and Ericsson of Sweden, entered Japan earlier than American companies and are attracting attention.
Under such circumstances, it was understandable that she, who belonged to the mobile phone related department at that time, actively gathered information by utilizing her stay in London.
On the other hand, at work, I used a PHS (personal handy-phone system) distributed by the company, but I didn't own a mobile phone because a conventional landline phone was sufficient for my private life.
However, when I retired in 2004, I bought a Nokia mobile phone that was excellent in design and function for contact when I was out, but Vodafone, a telecommunications company, was incorporated from the beginning.
And, with Vodafone, the radio waves did not reach my home, but I was not in trouble because the conventional landline phone was sufficient.
After Vodafone withdrew from Japan in 2006, I continued to use Nokia phones, but in 2015 it became impossible to use the device, so I replaced it with a foldable device made in Japan.

ロンドン到着してしばらくの間、私の同行者がボーダフォン、ノキア、エリクソンの店を見つけて店頭をチェックし、パンフレットを入手するので、私は「あなた、今は休暇中でしょ？」と内心でつぶやいた。
当時は、世界的に携帯電話が爆発的に普及し始めていて、そんな状況下で、日本の携帯関連会社は世界市場に目を向けること無くせっせと精密さや機能拡大に注意を払っていた。
ところが、イギリスに本社を置く携帯電話事業会社のボーダフォン（Vodafone）、携帯機器製造のフィンランドのノキア（ Nokia Corporation）やスウェーデンのエリクソン（ Ericsson）がアメリカ企業よりも早く日本に進出して注目を浴びていた。
そんな状況であったから、当時携帯電話関連部門に属していた彼女が、ロンドン滞在を活用して、積極的に情報収集するのも理解できることであった。
他方、私は職場では会社から配布されたPHS（ personal handy-phone system）を活用していたが、プライベートには従来の固定電話で充分だったので携帯電話は保有していなかった。
しかし、２００４年の定年退職を機に、私は外出時の連絡用として、デザインと機能面で卓越したノキアの携帯電話機を購入したのだが、通信業社のボーダフォンが初めから組み込まれていた。
そして、ボーダフォンでは私の自宅には電波が届かなかったのだが、従来の固定電話で事足りたのでそれで困ることはなかった。
その後の２００６年にボーダフォンが日本から撤退した後も、私はノキアの電話機は使い続けたが、２０１５年にその機器の使用が不可能になったので、日本製の折りたたみ式の機器に取り替えた。
