I and my friend traveled to Paris and London for the first time in the Golden Week in 1991. At that time, both of them liked museum tours, so in Paris the Louvre museum and the Musée d'Orsay etc were on the schedule.
However, neither me nor friends are familiar with the museum in London, so I decided to go to the National Gallery by looking at the letters "Free entrance fee" in the travel guidebook.
And, when I asked the staff of the National Gallery "I would like to see Impressionists," the male staff who seems to be in the mid-30s responded with a frustrating expression "Japanese people see only impressionists!"
That's why I did not have a bad impression on London.
I would like to express my respect for London's generosity, which makes it possible for overseas travelers to appreciate great works of art for free.
日本人は印象派だけしか観ない！
１９９１年のゴールデンウィークに私と友人は初めてパリとロンドン旅行をした。その時は二人とも美術館巡りが好きだったので、パリではルーブル美術館やオルセー美術館などを予定表に入れていた。
しかし、私も友人もロンドンの美術館については詳しくないで、旅行ガイドブックの「入館料無料」の文字を見みてナショナルギャラリーにゆくことにした。
そして、ナショナルギャラリーのスタッフに私が「印象派をみたいのですが」と尋ねたところ、３０代半ば思える男性スタッフは辟易した表情で「日本人が見るのは印象派ばかりだ！」応えたのだった。
だからと言って私がロンドンに悪い印象を抱いたわけではない。
偉大な美術品を、海外旅行者に対しても入館無料で鑑賞させてくれるロンドンの寛大さに、私は敬意を表したいくらいだ。
